In all our 26 years of living in the woods, I have never seen so many mosquitos. The minute we poke our noses out the door, swarms of the pests surround us. They cover Molly's nose, they buzz in my ear, and light on any exposed flesh, hungry for a meal.
Beside each of our outside doors stands a can of Repel Sportsmen Max insect repellent with 40% Deet. Before every walk, I spray all of my body, bare and clothed. The shield it offers doesn't eliminate mosquitos, I still spend a good deal of my walk fanning the cloud away from my face, but when I wear the repellent, I seldom get bitten.
I don't forget about my walking partner either. The main danger for her is contracting heartworm from a mosquito bite. She is protected by her once-a-month heartworm pill.
I wouldn't think of taking a walk in the woods without making sure my shield of protection is strong and fresh. So why do I walk in the world without making sure my shield of faith is strong and fresh? My worship with my church family and my private time of Bible reading and prayer all serve to renew my faith. When I neglect going to church, or time in the Word, or prayer, my shield wears thin and offers less protection.
Ephesians 6:16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.
The trials and temptations are still all around us, but we have the power to extinguish them. Let's not leave home today without our repellent!
